June 2008 the Path to Peace Foundation bestowed the 2008 Path to
Peace Award to President Elías Antonio Saca González of El Salvador. Archbishop Celestino Migliore, Apostolic Nuncio, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, and President of the Path to Peace Foundation, announced that President González has been unanimously selected to receive the Award by the Board of the Path to Peace Foundation, an agency established to carry out the projects to support the work of the Holy See Mission to the United Nations. Elías Antonio Saca began his radio career at the age of thirteen. He eventually became a television sports announcer and bought his own radio station. In 1997, Mr. Saca was named President of the Salvadoran Radio Association. He was also a member of the International Radio Broadcasting Association, where he chaired the Permanent Committee of Freedom of Speech, a watchword that he relentlessly upholds and has allowed him to create a new communication style for the government. His outstanding participating in a number of associations catapulted him an opinion leader on national issues. His enormous popularity caught the attention of ARENA’s leaders who nominated him first as candidate for mayor, and later as candidate for president, a process that took place through primaries for the first time in the party.
On March 21, 2004, Elías Antonio Saca González became President of the
Republic, obtaining an overwhelming 60% of the votes, which was a
landmark in the political and democratic life of El Salvador. He took the
oath of office on June 1, 2004. One of his first actions as President was to appoint a commissioner for democratic governing, who, in turn, created a group that includes representatives of all the political parties to discuss and find solutions to issues of national interest. He also introduced reforms in the law pertaining to the judicial sector and others aimed at reducing delinquency, approved fiscal reform; and has traced out “the map of poverty” that identities the areas of extreme poverty in order to work towards eradicating it. It is in recognition of his collaboration on the Agreement Peace Process that the Path to Peace Foundation honors President Elías Antonio Saca González with the 2008 Path to Peace Award, which was presented at a Gala Dinner held by the Foundation at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.
