Originally it was named “the Southern Association,” with headquarters in Washington, D.C. In 1985, however, the name was changed to the Federal Association USA. No specific territory was assigned, but in general its membership is concentrated in the mid-Atlantic, mid-Western and Southern States. The annual investiture of new members is held in late September each year. The Federal Association has always emphasized personal involvement by its members in its spiritual and hospitaller programs. For many years, members have worked as volunteers in such projects as SHARE (food for the poor) and Christmas in April and October (repair of homes, schools and the like), with Providence Hospital, at Gift of Peace (home for persons with AIDS), at senior centers, in soup kitchens and the like. Members have traveled on projects to Central America, the Caribbean, Europe and Africa. Its Task Force on Cuba has been charged with coordinating the Order’s assistance to that country. The Association also provides grants to a number of projects in the United States and internationally. In 1995, Malta House, a 30-unit residence for the frail elderly, was opened in the Washington, D.C. area, with construction made possible with funding from the Association. In 1996, a state of the art exercise and therapy center for the elderly, the Malta Rehabilitation Center, was opened in the same area, also made possible by a grant from the Association. That same year, Malta Park opened in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is a 132-unit residence for the frail elderly. Also, in 1996, a third Malta House opened in Syracuse, New York. In 1998,Malta Park at Sacred Heart was opened, the second assisted living facility sponsored by the Order in New Orleans. All of these depended on the efforts and donations of local Knights and Dames. In addition, a number of smaller grants are made each year by the Association to a wide variety of projects, such as assistance to the retirement home for Dominican Nuns in Iowa; space heaters for poor migrant workers in Maryland; a pregnancy center in Maryland; a dental clinic for Hispanics in Washington, D.C.; flu vaccine for a mobile care center for homeless people in Maryland; a program for the homeless in Chicago; and Christmas food baskets for the homeless in Washington, D.C. In recognition of its outstanding commitment to serving those most in need, and for its steadfast dedication and efforts to uplifting the downtrodden and assisting the vulnerable, the Path to Peace Foundation is pleased to bestow upon the Federal Association of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta the 2000 Champion of Peace Award.
