It was installed on 24 June of that year, with headquarters in San Francisco, and it was assigned the area including the States of Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington, as well as Alaska and Hawaii. The annual investiture of new members usually takes place in June. Presently, there are over 600 members in the Western Association. The Association began its works of charity with the donation of recovery rooms to St. Mary’s Hospital in San Francisco and to Providence (now called Summit) Hospital in Oakland. Aid was sent to the suffering in Hungary and Poland. The Association continues to be very much involved with these first of its charities. Its members serve as volunteers with the Day Care Center at St. Mary’s and with the Alzheimer Clinic at Summit Hospital. Aid is given to a school for blind children in Poland and to soup kitchens in Hungary. As the membership has grown, the number and variety of charities has multiplied, so that in recent years the Association annually grants at least one-half million dollars of assistance to more than a dozen domestic charities and several overseas programs. The Association is currently participating in the establishment of an Endowment Fund for the support of the Order’s Holy Family Hospital in Bethlehem. The Association has participated in the annual Pilgrimage of the Order to Lourdes since 1976. In recognition of its outstanding commitment to serving those most in need, and for its steadfast dedication and efforts to uplifting the downtrodden and assisting the vulnerable, the Path to Peace Foundation is pleased to bestow upon the Western Association of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta the 2000 Champion of Peace Award.
