On Wednesday June 11, 2008 from 1:15 to 2:45 p.m., the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See Mission, and its co-sponsors, the Path to Peace Foundation, the Association of Volunteers in International Service, the New Humanity Movement and MaterCare International will host a side event on the occasion of the High-Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS entitled: Treating, Preventing and Caring: Three approaches to addressing HIV and AIDS at the United Nations, Conference Room 9. The panelists include: Filippo Ciantia MD., AVSI Health Care Programs Manager-Uganda, “ Scaling up of and findings from a comprehensive Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) program in the conflict affected districts in Northern Uganda;” Robert L. Walley, MD., President and Founder of MaterCare International, “Making Deliveries Safe for Mother and Child” and Joseph Klock, Secretary-General of New Humanity, “Scaling up PMTCT and Making Motherhood Safe: Evidence from Africa and Conflict Affected Countries” This side event will identify and discuss three different approaches being undertaken to address the areas of prevention, treatment and care for people living with and impacted by HIV and AIDS. By providing a forum for exchange of experiences, the panel seeks to address maternal healthcare in the context of HIV and AIDS, field-level programs on PMTCT treatment and best practices for preventing the transmission of HIV/AIDS.
