PANELISTS AND MODERATOR

 

Dorrett Lyttle Byrd has spent the most recent 15 years of her career at Catholic Relief Services.  After serving as a Country Representative for Senegal and Ethopia, she moved into executive administration. In June of 2004, she assumed the position of Director, Program Quality Support in the Baltimore, headquarters of Catholic Relief Services.  Prior to that, Ms. Byrd was a Research Specialist with the African Development Foundation in Washington, DC and The Center for Policy Research also in Washington, DC.  She holds a Masters Degree in International Studies from the University of Denver, Colorado.  She is a past member of the Board of Trustees of the International Development Conference and has received several awards and professional distinctions.  

 

Mary Ann Dantuono is the Associate Director of the Vincentian Center for Church and Society at St. John’s University and adjunct professor in the College of Professional Studies.  Prior to joining the Vincentian Center Ms. Dantuono served the R.C. Diocese of Rockville Centre as the Director of Public Policy and Legal Affairs for Catholic Charities.  An expert on women’s issues for the Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations, she is also on the boards of several human service organizations. Mrs. Dantuono served as member of the Social Policy Committee of Catholic Charities USA for over 10 years, and from 1996-99 as an advisor to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Women and as member of the New York State Catholic Conference Public Policy Committee from 1993-96. Mrs. Dantuono earned a Juris Doctor at St. John’s University School of Law.

 

Christine Firer Hinze, received a B.A. and M.A. from the Catholic University of America and a Ph.D. in Christian Social Ethics from the University of Chicago. In 2006, following sixteen years on the theological faculty at Marquette University, she became Professor of Christian Ethics at Fordham University and Associate Director of the Center for Ethics Education at Fordham.  With a focus on foundational questions in Christian Social Ethics and Catholic Social Thought, Dr. Firer Hinze pays particular attention to dynamics and disparities surrounding gender, race and class.  She is the author of Comprehending Power in Christian Social Ethics, (Oxford: Scholiast Press, 1995) and has published extensively in academic journals. Her new book entitled Radical Sufficiency: The Legacy and Future of the Catholic Living Wage Agenda will be published in 2008.  Dr. Firer Hinze is on the Board of Collegium and is a regular plenary speaker at faculty workshops and scholarly colloquia. 

 

Maureen McGowan, RGS is the Director of HandCrafting Justice Inc., a project of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd. HCJ supports and assists women in the developing world in their efforts to create employment.  A Sister of the Good Shepherd since 1965, she helped to found HandCrafting Justice in 1997, and has been serving as Director since 2004. Sister Maureen established the Good Shepherd Volunteer Program in 1993 and served as director until 2004. Prior to these ventures, she worked at Good Shepherd Services, supporting youth and families and as a director of training and formation for the Sisters of the Good Shepherd.  She holds a M.S.W. from the Wurtzweiler School of Social Work of Yeshiva University.

 

Ann Orr  is Senior Economic Affairs Officer in the Financing for Development Office of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations.  Her work focuses on the follow-up to the Monterrey Consensus on Financing for Development, particularly in the areas of developing inclusive finance, international capital flows and enhancing South-South cooperation.  Prior to joining the Financing for Development Office, she was Chief of the Developing Economies Section in the Development Policy Analysis Division, overseeing analysis of current economic trends and development policies of developing countries.  She received her B.A. in Economics from Indiana University and her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania
