H.E. Ismael A. Gaspar Martins In April 2001 President dos Santos appointed Amb. Ismael Gaspar Martins as roving Ambassador and in May of 2001 as the new Ambassador to the United Nations. Prior to this appointment Amb. Martins served from 1996 as a founding member and Co-President of the Angola-South Africa Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He held concurrently the position of Managing Director of Gaspar Martins and Associates International Business Consultants.  Amb. Martin has also served on the Southern African Development Community Task Force at the World Economic Forum Summit and held the position of Executive Director of the African Development Bank in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire. Prior to his work for the Angolan government, among other positions, Amb. Gaspar Martins served with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), working as an economic affairs officer overseeing studies and policies on the issue of economic integration in Africa and on trade negotiations between the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States and the European Union.

In 2006 Amb. Gaspar Martins was elected Chairman of the inaugural session of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission.

Mr. Gaspar Martins holds a Bachelor's degree in economics from Lycoming College in Pennsylvania , United States and advanced degrees in economics from the University of Mannheim, Germany and Oxford University.

PANELISTS

Gerard Powers is Coordinator of the Catholic Peacebuilding Network and Director of Policy Studies at the Kroc Institute at Notre Dame.  Prior to joining the Kroc Institute in 2004, he worked for 17 years in the Office of International Justice and Peace of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the last six as director. He is co-editor of Peacemaking; his articles have focused on religion, conflict and peacebuilding, and the ethics of the use of force.

 

Dr Maryann Cusimano Love is Associate Professor of International Politics at the Catholic University of America.  Her books include Beyond Sovereignty: Issues for a Global Agenda and Morality Matters: Ethics and the War on Terrorism (forthcoming).  She served as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations project on homeland security and the U.S. Catholic Bishops’ International Policy Committee.

 

 

Mr. John Katunga is Senior Advisor for Peacebuilding for the East Africa Region at CRS and former acting executive director of the Nairobi Peace Initiative-Africa, a pan-African peace organization. A native of the DRC and now based in Nairobi, he can speak to the Church’s peacebuilding role in the DRC, northern Uganda, Kenya and other parts of the region.
