Home / Current Events Current Events On Wednesday, October 17, 2007, the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See and its co-sponsor, the Path to Peace Foundation, will host a side event entitled “Development, The New Name for Peace” commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Papal Encyclical Populorum Progressio -“On the Development of Peoples”. The event will be held in the United Nations ECOSOC Chamber from 1:15 to 2:45 pm. The keynote speech will be delivered by His Excellency, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, Archbishop of Dublin and former Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations in Geneva. Mr. Oscar de Rojas, Director of the Financing for Development Office in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, will moderate the event. The encyclical identifies people as the subject of their own development, encourages each person to make great efforts to free oneself from the hardships of hunger and poverty, and demands that greater value be in fact set upon the qualities of the human person. This side event will identify key contemporary social, economic and legal issues, discuss these issues through the prism of the encyclical, and provide a forum for the exchange of experiences across nations and enhanced communication among the presenters and participants. [Registration required by October 15, 2007, preferably by e-mailing office@holyseemission.org or by calling 212-370-7885. Enter the United Nations at 46th Street Visitors’ Entrance.
