2010 - Peter J. Kelly, M.D., K.M. Dr. Peter Kelly is President of the Board of Directors for CRUDEM (Center for the Rural Development of Milot) Foundation. When Peter finished his third year of college at the University of Notre Dame he volunteered for six weeks in Haiti as part of an international volunteer program at the University. At that time he felt that he received much more than he gave and promised that, if he ever had a skill he could share, he would return. Twenty-two years later, in 1993, he received a call from the Catholic Medical Mission board asking if he would like to volunteer at a hospital in Haiti. He looked at his many blessings and realized that then was the time to fulfill his promise. He has been returning to the CRUDEM Foundation’s Hôpital Sacré Coeur (HSC) in Milot, Haiti, one to three times a year since that call in 1993. With 72 beds and four operating rooms, it is one of the best full-service hospitals and trauma centers in Haiti. He learned about the Order of Malta during his time in Haiti because HSC has been a work of the Order since its inception in 1986. He realized that the mission of the Order, to serve the sick and the poor, reflected his personal mission and joined the Order in 1997. He was asked to join the Board of the CRUDEM Foundation, which governs HSC, in 1998 and was elected Vice President of the Board in 2003 and President in 2006. He was elected to the Board of Councilors of the American Association of Malta in 2009. After completing undergraduate studies at the University of Notre Dame, Peter attended Georgetown University Medical School. He did his Ophthalmology residency at Tufts New England Medical Center and was Chief Resident his last year. He lives in Wilbraham, Massachusetts, with his wife of 36 years, Linda. They have three grown children, two sons who are physicians and a daughter who is a special education teacher.
