Home / Awards / Servitor Pacis Award / 2001 THE SERVITOR PACIS AWARD RECIPIENTS 2001 - Reverend Monsignor Richard Albert Reverend Monsignor Richard Albert was born and educated in New York City. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1976 for the Friars of the Atonement. His first assignment was in Jamaica as a missionary priest. While serving in Jamaica, he discovered his love for the poor and vulnerable of that part of the world. He gave himself totally in service to the people of the island, and later was incardinated in the Archdiocese of Kingston, Jamaica. In 1982 Monsignor Albert founded St. Monica’s Home for those who have leprosy. Today it has 31 residents comprising those with Hansen’s Disease, abandoned elderly, and poor people dying of AIDS. Monsignor Albert’s involvement in many community projects led him to establish several institutions and organizations in Jamaica aimed at assisting those most in need. The St. Patrick’s Foundation, started in 1993, is the largest non-government and non-profit organization on the island. It has five human resource centers that offer feeding programs, health clinics, programs for pregnant teenage girls, remedial education, skills training in woodwork, dressmaking/tailoring, welding, and computer technology. He later began the Stella Maris Foundation in one of the most depressed and violent areas of Jamaica, which offers similar programs. He also built Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, several other health clinics, four basic schools for early childhood education. He has also expanded or repaired numerous church buildings, schools and social centers. The major aim throughout Monsignor Albert’s 25 years of ministry as a missionary priest has been serving the poorest of the poor in Jamaica. The Saint Patrick’s Foundation, with its five centers, the Stella Maris Foundation and Saint Monica’s Home, are the main challenges through which he is reaching out to thousands of people each year offering skills for self-reliance, education, empowerment and liberation. For his indefatigable efforts in serving the poorest of the poor in Jamaica, and for his outstanding pastoral and community leadership in helping those who are less fortunate to live healthy and meaningful lives free from fear, the Path to Peace Foundation is pleased to bestow upon Monsignor Richard Albert the title “Servitor Pacis”--Servant of Peace.
