Alvaré Helen Alvaré, born 8 October 1960, serves as the Director of Planning and Information for Pro-Life Activities at the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB), United States of America. In this capacity she acts as the national spokesperson on abortion for the American Catholic bishops, in television, radio, print media and public lectures. She also manages the NCCB’s contracts with outside communications consultants, having financial, programming, and policy responsibilities. Mrs. Alvaré travels and lectures extensively across the United States, speaking at colleges and universities, academic and professional societies, priests’ conferences, diocesan conventions and at many other public fora. She also testifies on behalf of the bishops before federal congressional committees and before the platform committees of the Democratic and Republican Parties. Mrs. Alvaré often speaks through the media, having appeared on such programs as Firing Line, the MacNeil/Lehrer Newshour, the David Brinkley Show, Charlie Rose, Crossfire, Good Morning America, Today, and many other programs. She also writes columns for the Catholic press, and op-ed articles for secular newspapers. Her opinions on behalf of the bishops are cited regularly in the major newsmagazines and newspapers. In 1994, TIME Magazine named Mrs. Alvaré one of the top fifty leaders in America under the age of forty. Prior to assuming her current position in October 1990, Mrs. Alvaré served for three years as an attorney in the Office of the General Counsel for the United States Catholic Conference (USCC), the public policy arm of the NCCB. There she co-authored amicus briefs entered by the USCC in the Supreme Court in the major abortion cases, as well as cases addressing euthanasia and the First Amendment. For three years prior to joining the USCC, Mrs. Alvaré was a trial attorney for the Philadelphia law firm of Stradley, Ronon, Stevens and Young. Mrs. Alvaré graduated summa cum laude from Villanova University in 1981. She received her J.D. from Cornell University in 1984. In 1989, she completed her M.A. in Theology at The Catholic University of America. She studied theology for two additional years in the doctoral program at the same University before assuming her current position. For her dedicated work in defense and support of human life, particularly the innocent life of the unborn, the Path to Peace Foundation is pleased to bestow upon Helen M. Alvaré the title “Servitor Pacis” — Servant of Peace.
