THE SERVITOR PACIS AWARD RECIPIENTS

1998 - Ernesto Caffo

Born in Modena in 1950, Ernesto Caffo is Associate Professor of Child Neuropsychiatry at the University of Modena Medical School, as well as President of “Telefono Azzurro”. After obtaining, with full honors, a doctoral degree in medicine and surgery at the University of Bologna in 1975, Ernesto Caffo continued his studies, with a specialization in Child Neuropsychiatry and Psychiatry, with particular focus on the complexities surrounding the psychopathology of adolescents and child abuse.

Ernesto Caffo is a member of numerous scientific international organizations. He served on the Board of Directors of the International Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions (IACAPAP), which is the world body uniting the National Associations of Infant/Child Psychiatry and related professions. Also, he has authored numerous books and scientific papers which have been published on both the national and international levels.

Convinced of the necessity to give a voice to children in order that their needs could be expressed, he founded the Italian Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse in 1978. In 1987 he became a member of the Board of Directors of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse. In that same year he founded “SOS Il Telefono Azzurro,” the first telephonic hotline operating in all of Italy, for the purpose of listening to and assisting neglected or abused children and adolescents and their families in crisis.

Thanks to the commitment and determination of Ernesto Caffo, “Telefono Azzurro” has become the principal interlocutor of Italy’s public institutions and of the private sector for defining policies regarding children. In Europe it has been the reference point for support projects benefiting children.

In 1988 Ernesto Caffo was one of the founders of the International Forum for Child Welfare, the organization which unites the most important world associations dealing with the problems of children. He was President of that organization from 1994-96.

Married in 1995, he and his wife Katia have one daughter, Camilla.

For promoting the understanding that a healthy and happy child is an important foundation for a peaceful society, and for providing a voice to children through the vehicle of “Telefono Azzurro,” which he founded, the Path to Peace Foundation is pleased to bestow upon Ernesto Caffo the title “Servitor Pacis” — Servant of Peace.
