THE SERVITOR PACIS AWARD RECIPIENTS

2003 - His Excellency Ambassador Eric Hotung

H.E. Ambassador Eric E. Hotung is the eldest grandson of Sir Robert Hotung, the last of the Merchant Princes and a leader of the Chinese community. Ambassador Hotung spent his childhood and youth in Shanghai. He later traveled to the United States and graduated from Georgetown University in 1951. He began his career in the New York Stock Exchange, and later worked for General Motors, as well as other American companies. Following the passing away of his grandfather in 1956, and then his father in 1957, he returned to Hong Kong to care for his family's property.

Carrying on the fine tradition of his family, Ambassador Hotung has always been enthusiastic in promoting public welfare and the cause of charity. For this reason, he founded the Eric Hotung Trust Fund in 1965, with the aim of developing educational opportunities in Hong Kong and other regions and countries. Owing to his wide participation in and warm support of international social activities, he was appointed by many countries to various educational councils and boards.

In 1999, after the Timorese people won independence through years of fighting in bloody battles, H.E. Ambassador Hotung was one of the first individuals to come to the country's aid by donating financial assistance, as well as a ship to return refugees to their homeland. He also established the Hotung Institute for Timor-Leste, which continues to assist the people of that region in the rebuilding of their new country. He was recently appointed by the Timor-Leste government as Ambassador at Large and Economic Advisor for Timor-Leste. Many other countries have also acknowledged his generosity and commitment to the principles of freedom and good governance.

As an old friend of the Chinese people, H.E. Ambassador Hotung is very concerned about China's development and warmheartedly supports her public welfare, and generously offers financial assistance to her cultural and educational progress. Mr. Hotung is the Founder and Chairman of the Hotung Institute of International Studies, through which he does important philanthropical work in Asia. He has made important humanitarian contributions to North Korea, China and Timor-Leste.

In recognition of his outstanding generosity and extraordinary contribution to mutual understanding and peace among peoples and communities throughout the world, the Path to Peace Foundation proudly bestows upon H.E. Ambassador Eric E. Hotung the title Servitor Pacis, “Servant of Peace.”
