THE SERVITOR PACIS AWARD RECIPIENTS

1995 - Silvester Krcméry, M.D.

Silvester Krcméry, 70, was born in Trnava. He studied medicine in Bratislava, Paris and Prague. His first experiences as a doctor were in Morocco and in 1948 he began work in the Czech border area. Significantly influenced by Prof. Kolakovic and a friend, Vladimir Jukl, he, with them, became part of the so-called Kolakovic's "Family", working for the spread of the Gospel in Slovakia and in Czech lands. During his military service he was arrested for lay apostolate activities and after three years of investigatory detention he was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment, seven which were spent in solitary confinement. This was due to his fidelity to the teachings of the Catholic Church and to the Holy Father.

Having memorized the entire Gospel of St. John prior to his imprisonment he was thus strengthened, through prayer and meditation, to resist continued brainwashing attempts by his captors. He describes his experiences in a book which is currently being published. After his release he worked as a doctor in a hospital in Bratislava. Together with friends, he started again his work of Christianizing the former Czechoslovakia. Along with Vladimir Jukl he established the secular institute "Fatima" and became the first principal of the community. Silvester Krcméry continues to spread the Gospel among youths, alcoholics, drug-addicts, the homeless and criminals in Eastern Europe and in Russia.
