Home / Awards / Servitor Pacis Award / 2003 THE SERVITOR PACIS AWARD RECIPIENTS 2003 - His Excellency Archbishop Renato Martino Born in Salerno, Italy on November 23, 1932, Renato R. Martino had always dreamed of becoming a priest. After primary and secondary studies in Salerno, he entered the seminary in Rome where he studied philosophy and theology. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 20, 1957. Following his ordination, he was assigned to pastoral ministry for a brief time as chaplain at Collegio San Giuseppe of the La Salle Brothers in Rome. He also served as chaplain of the Catholic Boy Scouts, and as ecclesiastical assistant to several movements of Catholic Action. He then went on to study at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, where he earned a doctorate in Canon Law and was commissioned to serve in the diplomatic corps of the Holy See. Since July 1, 1966, he has served in various Apostolic Nunciatures throughout the world, including Nicaragua, the Philippines, Lebanon, Canada and Brazil. From 1970 to 1975 he was Head of the Department for International Organizations at the Vatican Secretariat of State. On September 14, 1980 he was appointed Apostolic Pro-Nuncio to Thailand and Apostolic Delegate to the Republic of Singapore, Malaysia, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Brunei Darussalam. He was named Titular Archbishop of Segerme and ordained to the Episcopate on 14 December 1980. After the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Republic of Singapore, he was appointed the first Apostolic Pro-Nuncio to Singapore in 1981. In 1986, Archbishop Martino was appointed the third Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations Headquarters in New York. During his forty years as a diplomat of the Holy See, Archbishop Martino has represented the Holy See at International Conferences and Meetings, both as a Member and as Head of Delegation, including the International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo, Egypt, in 1994, the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China in 1995, the International Conference on Financing for Development in Monterrey, Mexico in 2002, the Second World Conference on Ageing in Madrid, Spain in 2002, and the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2002, to name but a few. He holds honorary degrees from a number of colleges and universities, and has been awarded numerous decorations for his tireless and courageous efforts on behalf of the Gospel of Life. Archbishop Martino has devoted his entire priesthood to the service of the Holy See, and has been an undaunting voice for peace and justice among the Family of Nations. In 1991 he established the Path to Peace Foundation in order to help support and facilitate the work of the Holy See Mission to the United Nations. On October 1, 2002, His Holiness Pope John Paul II named Archbishop Martino President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. In recognition of his indefatigable and passionate witness to the Gospel of Christ, and for his extraordinary devotion to and zeal for the cause of peace and justice, the Path to Peace Foundation is most pleased to bestow upon Archbishop Renato R. Martino the title “Servitor Pacis”—Servant of Peace.
