THE SERVITOR PACIS AWARD RECIPIENTS

1999 - Daniel E. Meehan

Born in 1930 on Staten Island, New York, Mr. Daniel E. Meehan, K.M. is regional Vice President of the US National Committee of the International Cargo Handling Coordination Association as well as President and CEO of Meehan Seaway Service, Ltd.. He has also been active in the Federal Association of the Knights of Malta, serving as a two-term member of the Board of Directors, chairman of the International Committee and charter member of the Grants Committee. In these capacities and as the founder of the Meehan Family Foundation in 1980, he has dedicated his time and energy to several charitable organizations and activities worldwide, in places such as Mexico, Guatemala, South Africa, Ukraine, the Republic of Georgia, Cuba and Haiti.

Mr. Meehan’s vocational career started with his contribution of equipment and facilities to bale and store over 3 million pounds of used clothing for Catholic Relief Services’ annual Thanksgiving Clothing Drive in the 1970s. In addition, he provided the original warehouse and arranged distribution for Milwaukee’s SHARE program, following which he was elected to the Board of Directors for World-SHARE. He also provided the seed money to expand SHARE programs in Washington, DC and Baltimore. He and his wife have been honored by the Archbishops of Washington, DC and Baltimore for their initiative, which has resulted in an average distribution of 20,000 supplemental family food packages per month since 1992.

As a former sponsor of St. John’s School for the Deaf, Little City for Retarded Children, and the Milwaukee HELP Program, Mr. Meehan has done much to care for the “least among us”- the handicapped, the homeless, the elderly and the poor. He has served on the Board of Trustees for Family Hospital in Milwaukee and is a Board member and major contributor to the St. Josephaat Basilica Restoration Project, also in Milwaukee. He was the sole sponsor for the St. Amelian Home For Boys Aftercare Program, which reunites dysfunctional children with their families and provides them with further guidance, and was the co-chairman of the successful 1996-1998 Six Million Dollar Campaign for St. Anne’s Intergenerational Day Care Center in Milwaukee. The Meehan Family Foundation has granted, to date, 53 four-year scholarships to educational institutions of choice and eligibility. The Foundation has also pledged to construct in full a day care center for the elderly under the auspices of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. In Mexico, he sponsored many grants to the Villa de los Niños in Chalco; in 1995 and 1996 he helped finance the Whebede pre-primary school and care center in Mandini, South Africa.

As a 1951 graduate of the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York, Mr. Meehan’s professional career has focused around the maritime industry. In 1985 he was presented with the State of Wisconsin’s Governors Excellence Award for export achievement and was named the Maritime Person of the Year by the Port of Milwaukee Maritime Council-Seaway Users Association in 1986. He is the member of numerous maritime trade associations.

On two occasions, Mr. Meehan has participated as a volunteer on the Knight of Malta Federal Association’s pilgrimage to Lourdes. In 1986, he was invested as a Knight of Magistral Grace, in 1995 he received the Cross of the Order of Malta,pro Merito Melitensi, and in 1997 he received the Commander of Merit, pro Merito Melitensi. He was recently invested into the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem in recognition for his efforts to assist the poor and the sick. He and his wife Eileen have five children and 18 grandchildren.

For his dedicated generosity and willingness to use his gifts for the benefit of those most in need yet who are too often neglected or forgotten, the Path to Peace Foundation is pleased to bestow upon Mr. Daniel E. Meehan the title of “Servitor Pacis” - Servant of Peace.
