Abilio Ferreiras da Nova Monsignor Abilio Ferreira da Nova, born 1 July 1933 in Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal, and ordained a priest on 29 June 1959 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He received his priesthood formation in the minor Seminary of the Archdiocese of Sao José - Rio de Janeiro. He obtained a Masters Degree in Theology in 1969 (Instituto Nacional de Pastoral); Licentiate in Philosophy in 1972 (São João Del Rei - Minas Gerais); and Bachelor Degrees in both Law and Administration from Gama Filho University (1974, 1978). Msgr. Ferreira da Nova has served in a number of pastoral assignments, as well as in Archdiocesan postings. In 1992 he was appointed Member of the Holy See Delegation to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro. Among his many accomplishments are the following: he donated 910 apartments at the "Crusade of São Sebastião"; founded 5 parishes in the Archdiocese; and oversaw the construction of São Francisco de Paula Hospital. Currently he serves as: Administrative Commissioner, Third Order of Saint Francis de Paula; Director, Cathedral Radio; Director, House of the Poor of Our Lady of Copacabana; Manager, Metropolitan Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro; Pastor, Our Lady of Copacabana and Santa Rosa de Lima; and Archdiocesan Pro-Vicar General. Monsignor Ferreira da Nova's accomplishments in the areas of education and social service include: nursery programs for young, poor children; literacy, reintegration and professional courses for street children from ages 13 to 17; social assistance for the poor; and a home for the elderly. On 20 March 1994 His Holiness Pope John Paul II named him an Apostolic Prothonotary.
