THE SERVITOR PACIS AWARD RECIPIENTS

2000 - Dr. Giuseppe Salvatore Satriano

Dr. Giuseppe Salvatore Satriano was born in Baragiano, Potenza, Italy in 1946. Following undergraduate studies at the University of Naples, he studied medicine, surgery and obstetrics from that same University, completing this doctoral education in 1973. Upon graduation, Dr. Satriano founded “Soccorso Amico,” a Salerno-based association of volunteer medical professionals who offer free, 24 hour medical emergency assistance, providing ambulance service, distribution of medicines and critical care services for all in need.

Dr. Satriano’s first internship was at the Medical Council of the Province of Salerno, after which he became the District Doctor of the City of Amalfi in 1974. In that same year, he also served as District Doctor and Health Officer of the municipality of San Rufo, and as Assistant Doctor of the Department of Cardio-Vascular Surgery of the Hospital of Massa Carrara-Toscana. From 1974 till today, Dr. Satriano has served in various positions throughout Southern Italy, using his gifts and talents to bring God’s healing and compassion to countless people. These positions have included:

1975, Fiduciary Doctor of the Post and Telecommunications; 1975, District doctor of Salerno; 1976, Assistant doctor of emergency surgery and first-aid department at the Hospital of Salerno “San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d’Aragona”; 1976, Apprenticeship at the general surgery Department of the Hospital of Salerno; 1976-1978, Scholarship in cardio-surgery at the Italian Hospital of Buenos Aires, Argentina; 1978-1982, Assistant doctor of emergency surgery and first-aid department at the Hospital of Salerno; 1980-1984, Specialization in cardio-angio-surgery at the University of Naples; 1982-1987, Assistant doctor in cardio-angio- surgery at the Hospital “San Carlo” of Potenza; 1987, Surgeon od the general surgery department of the Hospital “San Giovanni of God and Ruggi d’Aragona” of Salerno; 1989-1991, Specialization in anesthesia and intensive care at the University of Catania; 1992-1995, Doctor in-charge of the Central Operative of the Province of Emersalerno; 1995, Director of the emergency system of the ASL NA/5; 1995-1999, II level Medical Director of the emergency division of the Hospital “San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d’Aragona” of Salerno; 1998, Project director for advanced metallurgical industries of Lisbon, Portugal, “Ambulance of the Third Millennium”; 1999, Director of the Central Operative unit for emergency health service of the Province of Salerno.

In addition to the abovementioned positions, Dr. Satriano has also served on numerous boards of medical and civic institutions, including: the Commission of Provincial Health Care Services for Civil Protection; the Review “Civitas Hyppocratica Scuola Medica Salernitana”; the Commission for Health Care Emergency of the region of Campania; the “Italian Resuscitation Council”; the American Civil Defence Association (TACDA); and Lions Club International. He is also a Knight of the Federation of the Autonomous Priorates of the Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.

Dr. Satriano has received numerous honors throughout his career as a physician, including: the International Award “San Valentino d’Oro”, from Termi, Italy; the International Award “Silver Plate” of the “Centro San Camillo”, from Naples, Italy; the International Award “The Gold Chestnut”, from Campagna (SA), Italy; the International Award, Gold Medal “Marcello Candia: A Life for Others”, from Naples, Italy; and the Paul Harris Fellow recognition of the Rotary International Foundation.

For his care for the poor and sick, which he gives so freely and generously, the Path to Peace Foundation is pleased to bestow upon Dr. Giuseppe Salvatore Satriano the title “Servitor Pacis”--Servant of Peace.
